She Sits Beside You: Providing Support and Hope for Domestic Violence Survivors at Work

1 in 4 women will be impacted by domestic violence in their lifetime, so it is quite possible the woman sitting beside you at the conference table, collaborating on projects, sharing insights, may be that 1.

In this session designed specifically for leaders, participants gain vital insights into recognizing potential indicators of domestic violence (DV) survivors, and how they present at work… from a survivor.

This session is deeply vulnerable, personal, and uncomfortable to present at times, but it was created out of demonstrated need. When snippets of my own DV experiences in leadership workshops and keynotes, almost every time, women approached afterwards to share their story; in many circumstances, it was the first time they had done so. I realized I was not alone, and to best support others, it was time to use my voice, create awareness, and provide actionable strategies for leaders to support those that have experienced DV, even if it had never been disclosed.

As leadership conversations grow around mental health at work, the need for trauma informed leadership becomes more prevalent. Leaders often have a playbook of strategies to support women in crisis, however don't recognize the unseen scars of DV, or how to support women long after physical and emotional abuse have ended; these experiences forever shape how survivors interact with the world, including how they communicate, collaborate, and think critically at work.

In this session, participants will learn to identify behavioral and emotional indicators of trauma that may be present. This session will also cover the importance of creating supportive workplace environments, and provide actionable strategies for leaders to effectively respond to the needs of survivors.

Empower yourself with the knowledge and tools necessary to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by domestic violence.

Key Takeaways:

  • Build awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence through data and story

  • Identify potential behavioral and/or emotional indicators of domestic violence, how they may be presenting in the workplace, and the negative impact they could have on growth and career progression

  • Provide strategies that create conditions where survivors feel safe to stay, grow, and thrive
